Shelton earns more accolades

The Times' Gary Shelton placed third among columnists in final judging for the 2004 Associated Press Sports Editors contest.
Competing against the country's largest newspapers (daily circulations above 250,000), Shelton ranked behind Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times and Joe Posnanski of the Kansas City Star. Shelton was ranked No. 1 in 1995 and also placed in the top 10 in 1994 and 2003. This year's entry included columns about the first Olympic gold medal won by an Israeli athlete, former Bucs running back Warrick Dunn, the responsibility of college presidents to address the lack of black football coaches, people profiting off the death of Pat Tillman, and Rams coach Mike Martz.
Autos writer Brant James received honorable mention in the game story category for his story on Dale Earnhardt Jr. winning the Daytona 500.
