TAMPA - Two fires broke out Monday morning in rental properties at opposite ends of the city, causing thousands of dollars in damage but no injuries.

The first fire started shortly after 8:30 a.m. at 2019 N 11th St., a duplex in Ybor City. The fire started in a window air conditioning unit that served one side of the duplex, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

Crews had the fire under control within 30 minutes, and no one was injured. The side of the duplex where the fire started sustained about $10,000 in damage. The other rental unit had only minor smoke damage.

Tampa Fire Rescue officials did not have the identities of the people who lived there.

An hour after the Ybor fire, and seven miles north, an unattended candle burning on a nightstand at 1203 E Bougainvillea Ave. sparked a fire that caused about $40,000 in damage. According to Tampa Fire Rescue, James Strachan and his three children were home when the fire started. It took firefighters 15 minutes to get the fire under control.

Strachan and his children weren't injured, but the house is uninhabitable. The American Red Cross is giving the family clothing and temporary shelter.
