Ex-Panther receiver will not get a new trial

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Former Panthers receiver Rae Carruth was denied a request for a new trial in the 1999 shooting death of his pregnant girlfriend.
Judge Charles Lamm on Monday rejected arguments that a 911 call made by Cherica Adams should not have been allowed into evidence. He said it did not violate Carruth's constitutional right to confront his accuser.
Carruth is serving a sentence of at least 18 years and 11 months.
Adams was eight months pregnant with Carruth's baby when she was gunned down in a drive-by shooting on Nov.16, 1999, in Charlotte. Doctors saved her son, but she died a month later. As she lay wounded, Adams called 911 and implicated Carruth.
Carruth was charged with hiring two men to kill her because he did not want to pay child support.
DOLPHINS: Guard Damion Cook signed a one-year deal. He started the final six games for the Browns last season.
FALCONS: Middle linebacker Ed Hartwell signed a six-year, $26.25-million deal with an $8-million signing bonus. He was a starter in Baltimore since 2002.
GIANTS: Quarterback Jesse Palmer re-signed. He will compete with Jim Miller for the backup job behind Eli Manning.
JETS: The team increased its offer for Manhattan land it hopes to use for a stadium from $100-million to $720-million. But two other groups also increased offers. Cablevision, which first offered $600-million, increased it to an undisclosed amount. It owns Madison Square Garden and does not want competition for conventions and other events. And TransGas Energy Systems submitted a $1-billion offer, but it likely will be rejected because it requires the transportation authority to help TransGas build a $2-billion electric power plant. A decision is expected by the end of March.
RAVENS: The one-year, $3-million offer sheet running back Chester Taylor signed with Cleveland was matched. He was the primary backup to Jamal Lewis.
REDSKINS: Linebacker Chris Clemons re-signed. He played in six games after being signed in November and had three sacks.
DRAFT: Philadelphia and St. Louis will get four compensatory picks next month and Carolina, New England and San Francisco three. In all, 14 teams will get extra selections in the third through seventh rounds based on free agents they lost in 2004.
