UF coach and swimmer receive SEC honors

GAINESVILLE - Florida's Gregg Troyand was named swimming coach of the year and Gators junior Ryan Lochte was named swimmer of the year in the Southeastern Conference. Leading the Gators to a 12-1 record, Troy earned his third career SEC men's coach of the year honor and led the Gators to their highest win total since 1962.
Lochte broke two American, three U.S. Open, three NCAA, nine SEC and UF records. The 2004 Olympic gold and silver medalist is the top seed in three individual events at the NCAAs.
BASEBALL: Franklin Pierce overpowered host Eckerd 18-7 in a non-Sunshine State Conference baseball game Monday night at Turley Field. ... Tampa junior infielder Lee Cruz was named Sunshine State Conference player of the week. Cruz batted .526 (10-for-19) with one double, two triples, two home runs, 16 RBIs and 10 runs scored in five wins. The Pasco native hit safely in all five games, had three two-hit games and one three-hit game. He drove in runs in four games. ... Stetson senior right-hander Ryan Dixon was named Atlantic Sun Conference pitcher of the week. The Seminole grad pitched eight shutout innings against Mercer on Friday to help lead Stetson to a 17-0 victory. Dixon is 3-1 with one save and a 4.41 ERA. He leads the team in victories, innings pitched (34.2) and strikeouts (30).
FOOTBALL: Jerry Schmitt, the coach at Westminster College for five seasons, was hired as Duquesne's coach. Schmitt, an assistant at Duquesne from 1985-87 and again from 1992-99, replaces Greg Gattuso, who was hired recently to direct Pittsburgh's recruiting.
GOLF: Tampa senior Brian Ward was named Sunshine State Conference golfer of the week. Ward shot 143 (73-70) to finish second at the Eagle Golf Invitational. He went 1 under par to lead Tampa to an 11th-place finish in the 21-team field.
SOFTBALL: The Sunshine State Conference named Saint Leo junior left-hander Katie Heintz pitcher of the week for the fourth time this season. The award is for her accomplishments last week when she went 3-0 with a 0.00 earned-run average. The Portland native, 17-2 with a 0.06 earned-run average, allowed one unearned run and five walks.
TRACK: The Atlantic Coast Conference named FSU freshman Elliot Woods men's performer of the week after he posted region qualifying times in the 400-meter high hurdles en route to two first-place finishes at the FSU relays.
