Unincorporated Crystal River has its benefits
Letters to the Editor
Published March 23, 2005
Re: If Crystal River dissolves, what will be next?, letter, Friday Citrus Times.
In order that letter writer Donald Perla is not further misled or allowed to mislead, please allow me to clarify the legalities and agenda of this proposed petition.
The amount of registered voters signing this will determine whether the proposed ordinance should go to a referendum.
The referendum outcome will be the will of the people. The majority will have spoken, whatever the results may be.
These steps show DEMOCRACY in action.
If the City Council ruled in favor of the majority, there would not be a problem. Most citizens feel that only a chosen few are dealt with favorably.
Revocation of the city charter will leave this community under the protection and guidance of the county, i.e. Homosassa, Lecanto, Beverly Hills, Floral City. These are communities just as Crystal River will be an unincorporated community.
Our taxes will be lowered.
Garbage collection will be maintained via private contracts between garbage collection companies and the residents, if they choose, or they can dispose of the garbage themselves.
The business community should have no reason to change its stationery, business cards, signs or whatever. We will still be known as Crystal River, an unincorporated community.
Issues such as the municipal bond, contracts and projects currently connected with the city will be legally addressed and resolved.
Did it ever occur to Mr. Perla that something is amiss at City Hall when we are lacking a city manager, city attorney, city planner, public works director and city finance director?
That our reputation as a city is lacking something when we have had 10 city managers in 20 years?
Some cities have city managers for 20 years. Continuity can be very productive.
This is democracy and we are striving to maintain democracy in a democratic way.
-- Claire A. Titus, Crystal River
