Bright House sponsors youth volunteer awards

Students in grades 9-12 with a 2.5 or higher grade point average who have performed at least 50 community volunteer hours are eligible to enter a contest sponsored by Bright House Networks.

Twelve first-place winners will receive laptop computers and a $500 U.S. savings bond. Eight runnersup will receive a $250 savings bond. Winners will be selected from all four Bright House Networks regions in the bay area and will be announced in early May.

Students who meet the eligibility criteria must submit an application by April 15. Applications are available online at tampabay.mybrighthouse.com. Click on "About Us" and go to the "Volunteer Youth Awards" link.

Poynter has scholarships for high school students

Students with financial need who enjoy writing and want to participate in the Poynter Institute's high school journalism program can apply for need-based scholarships for the yearlong program.

Scholarships will cover the $100 tuition and all materials for the program, which begins with seminars on writing, photojournalism, page design and journalistic ethics on June 5 at the Poynter Institute, 801 Third St. S.

Participants will return to Poynter for monthly seminars with faculty and professional journalists throughout the year.

The program is open to students who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors in the fall who live in Pinellas and neighboring counties. Minority students are especially encouraged to apply.

USF St. Petersburg offers teaching seminar

Florida teachers with a minimum of three years' experience are invited to apply for an all-expense-paid summer seminar at the Florida Center for Teachers on the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus.

Each weeklong seminar is a hands-on, experiential program that takes teachers into the field to explore topics including Asian Religions, Harlem Renaissance, Sense of Place, Ethics and Issues in the Press, and Los Latinos.

The seminars are limited to 25 teachers of prekindergarten through 12th grade, media specialists and counselors. In-service credit is available. Visit www.flahum.org for applications and program descriptions or call 553-3808.
