Chamber gives business honor to Marty Petty

ST. PETERSBURG - Marty Petty, publisher and executive vice president of the St. Petersburg Times, was named Business Woman of the Year on Thursday at an annual symposium sponsored by the Women's Council of the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce.

Mary Wyatt Allen received Community Service Woman of the Year honors at the luncheon in the Palm Court Ballroom at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort.

Petty joined the Times in 2000 as executive vice president and was named publisher in August 2004. She came to St. Petersburg from Connecticut, where she was publisher of the Hartford Courant.

Allen is a St. Petersburg native who has been an active community volunteer for 40 years. Her focuses include the St. Petersburg Free Clinic, the YWCA of Tampa Bay, the Palladium Theater and the Suncoasters, which named her Ms. Sun in 1996.

Shelley Broader, president and chief operating officer of Sweetbay Supermarkets and Kash n' Karry, was the keynote speaker at the event, which is held in celebration of Women's History Month.

Speaking of Sweetbay's commitment to anchor Tangerine Plaza, a shopping center under construction in the Midtown neighborhood, Broader said one of her roles is that of a catalyst for change.

The store, which is being built in an area that long has experienced economic challenges, is "the first seed in a beautiful garden where nothing has grown for a long time," she said.
