ASU player claims gun 'just went off'

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Arizona State football player Loren Wade told investigators his gun "just went off" during a confrontation with former ASU player Brandon Falkner, according to court documents released Monday.

The shooting Saturday outside a Scottsdale nightclub left Falkner, 25, dead with a gunshot to the head. Wade, 21, is being held without bond on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Wade, a running back from Los Angeles, was dismissed from the team. Falkner, a defensive back from Peoria, played for the Sun Devils from 1998 through 2001.

MORE FOOTBALL: USC starting cornerback Eric Wright is free on bail after being arrested on suspicion of rape, according to Los Angeles police. Wright, 19, was arrested Saturday in connection with a sexual assault that allegedly occurred in an apartment complex near campus.

BASEBALL: Miami junior Cesar Carrillo was named ACC pitcher of the week for the second time this season. ... Jacksonville scored six runs in the seventh inning to beat UCF 10-9. ... Eckerd beat the Southern Maine 21-12.

GOLF: The Florida State men (299) were tied for ninth after the first round of the inaugural Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate at the Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, S.C. Augusta State led at 276.

SOFTBALL: USF's Tiffany Stewart was named Conference USA co-hitter of the week. ... UF's Stacey Stevens was named Southeastern Conference pitcher of the week. ... Stetson split an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader with Campbell, winning 6-0 and losing 3-1.

TRACK: Lyle Bennett, a former Central Michigan athlete and coach who guided the team to 11 Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, died Thursday in Mount Pleasant, Mich., at age 101.
