Hoosiers huddle with newcomers

Mary and Steve Paul moved to St. Petersburg from Indianapolis only a couple of months ago, and already they are discovering new friends, some of whom have Indiana connections.
Their March 23 party began with cocktails on the rooftop terrace of Harbour Hill, where they have settled, and honored Brian Reale. Mary Paul said Reale introduced her to St. Petersburg years ago, but she decided to move to Mexico at the time.
Fred Wilcox was there, and Louise King, who lives in Sarasota and is a daughter of the late Andrew Cordier, a co-founder of the United Nations and a former president of Columbia University. Mrs. King is from Indiana and was the first female co-anchor on NBC's Today show, with the late John Chancellor.
Hoosier musical great Hoagy Carmichael's son Randy, also an entertainer, and wife Susan have just moved to St. Petersburg, and they were present. So were artists Carol Mickett and Robert Stackhouse. The Indiana connection there? The couple have been commissioned to create an enormous native limestone installation for the Indianapolis Art Center.
You didn't have to have an Indiana connection to attend, but other guests did. The group included longtime Indianapolis Star columnist Donna Mullinix; Indianapolis portrait artist Lolly Glasel; Kitty Safford and daughter Nancy (Kitty Safford and Mrs. Paul attended the same grade school and had the same teachers, but in different years); and Dr. John and Ann Mahaffey McGrath, who spend their summers in Indianapolis. (Mrs. McGrath's parents, the late Jane and Thomas F. Mahaffey, were Hoosiers; her father founded the Mahaffey Co. and was a benefactor of St. Petersburg's Bayfront Center.) Attendees also included Bill and Sally Habermeyer, Fred and Barbara McCoy and David and Guna Carr.

Springtime in Paris is the subject of legend, and now it is the substance of sweet memories for Dr. Maury and Mimi Krystel of Seminole. They returned home Saturday from a 10-day trip to the French capital.
"We even had good weather, much to our surprise," Mrs. Krystel said, having watched forecasts of bitter cold earlier in the month.
Dr. Krystel's office staff accompanied them for much of the trip. He specializes in cosmetic dentistry, and the couple's six traveling companions - Trudy George, Carolyne Smith, Rita Ash, Debi Thackrey, Karen Lincoln and Mary Kreuger - have worked with him, collectively, for 100 years.
Mrs. Krystel, who is development associate at the Canterbury School of Florida, said the trip was a gift of appreciation to the women; Dr. Krystel has been in practice for three decades.
The group's itinerary included the Eiffel Tower, the Arc De Triomphe, Notre Dame, Versailles, the Musee d'Orsay and the Marais.
