  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Signup for students new to school begins

Parents whose children have never attended a Pinellas public school may have to start the assignment process.

Parents with kindergarteners or other children who will enter a Pinellas County public school for the first time in August can begin registration on Monday.

Parents who have not been issued a school assignment must first visit a Family Education and Information Center with the child's original birth certificate or a certified copy or other proof of birth, such as a baptismal certificate or passport; proof of residency, such as a utility bill for power, water, cable or sewer, a noncellular phone bill or a lease agreement in the parents' name; and a recent report card for students entering grades 1-12.

District officials want to make sure parents realize that unlike the days before controlled choice, the current method for assigning students to schools, they can no longer begin the registration process by going directly to the school closest to home.

Instead, they must visit a family center to find out which schools in their attendance area still have room.

Choices will be fewer than they were during the choice application period, which took place last fall.

Parents of elementary school children who already have received a school assignment must complete the second phase of registration at the assigned school.

They must bring a Florida Certificate of Immunization Form DH680, including the month, day and year of shots, and a physical examination form signed by a licensed examiner within the past 12 months.

Parents of middle and high school students should contact the assigned school for registration procedures.

The St. Petersburg Family Education and Information Center at 3420 Eighth Ave. S is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday; 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday; and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday. Call 552-1595.

The Clearwater Family Education and Information Center at 1101 Marshall St. is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday; and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday. Call 298-2858.

Registration will continue through May 13.
