TAMPA - A Jacksonville man died early Wednesday when his sport utility vehicle swerved through traffic on Interstate 75 south of Sun City Center and hit a semitrailer truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Ryan D. Portis, 37, was driving his 2002 Toyota SUV in the outside lane of northbound I-75 about 1:45 a.m. when he cut across traffic, passed a 2000 Chevrolet sedan in the center lane and hit the back of the semitrailer.

Portis' SUV flipped several times before coming to rest in the inside lane, according to an FHP report.

Portis, who was wearing a seat belt, died from his injuries. The semitrailer driver, 58-year-old Anthony H. Prendergast of North Lauderdale, was not injured. The Chevrolet driver, Jamie K. Raschella, 20, of Palmetto, also escaped injury, FHP officials said.
