ST. PETERSBURG - Leftfielder Carl Crawford has been one of the Devil Rays' best players. Friday, the Devil Rays and Crawford announced a deal that could keep it that way until 2010.
Crawford signed a long-term contract that guarantees him $15.25-million over four years and could be worth up to $32.5-million over six years.
"First of all, I'd like to say I don't know what to say," Crawford said at a Tropicana Field news conference. "I'm just so excited."
The deal offers Crawford, 23, long-term financial security. More importantly, it gives the Rays the chance to keep him through his first two years of free-agent eligibility, as they hold team options in 2009 and 2010.
