Two more suspected of contracting E. coli

By Times Staff Writer
Published April 3, 2005

State health officials on Friday added two more people to the list of fairgoers suspected of contracting a potentially fatal bacteria, bringing the total to 35.

There are 22 confirmed cases that involve people who had diarrhea after attending either the Florida State Fair, the Strawberry Festival in Plant City or the Central Florida Fair in Orlando.

The 19 children and three adults all tested positive for a specific strain of E. coli, or showed signs of having hemolytic uremic syndrome, HUS, a fairly infrequent and life-threatening complication of the E. coli infection.

State health officials are focusing on Plant City based Ag-Venture Farm Shows, which provided petting zoos for all three fairs.
