Daily fishing report
By MIKE WHITMAN
Published April 6, 2005
Kingfish had to show up sooner or later, and they started to trickle in late last week. Chris Clark on Mega-Bite picked up several.
Despite the dirty water Monday, schoolies were chasing Sabiki rigs back to the boat. Because of the available bait, fish first showed up in and around the shipping channel.
Until last weekend's cold front, marker buoys were holding decent schools of Spanish sardines, blue runners and cigar minnows. With the water again dirty, the bait has moved to deeper, cleaner areas. When the water clears, expect bait to move back to the markers and toward the beach.
In addition to the kingfish, the shipping channel is holding good numbers of bonito, Spanish mackerel and cobia.
Gag grouper have been chewing in depths of 45 to 100 feet. As the water warmed over the past several days, their metabolism has sped up, increasing their hunger. They have been chasing palm-size pinfish.
Mangrove snapper fishing is starting to improve. We have caught mangroves as close as 65 feet. As always, the deeper you go, the bigger the snapper.
