ST. PETERSBURG - Oldsmar Christian forward Trevor Ferguson and Admiral Farragut center Marreese Speights were named to the Florida Sportswriters Association's all-state basketball teams in their respective classes Monday, with more county players likely to come this week.
Ferguson, who was second in the county in scoring at 25 points per game, was named to the Class A first team. Last year he was honorable mention after having his season cut short by a pair of broken wrists.
Granted an extra year by the Florida High School Athletic Association, Ferguson led Oldsmar Christian to its best season and highest state ranking (No. 2) last season. He committed to Pittsburgh the same day he was named all-state.
Ferguson, a 6-6 guard and forward, is joined on the all-state team by teammates Alex Arias and David Minaya, cousins who transferred to Oldsmar Christian together from different schools. Both were honorable mention.
Speights, who transferred from Gibbs after helping the Gladiators to the playoffs in 2003-04, is a Class 2A first-team selection after averaging 18.5 points and 8.9 rebounds. He also led the team in free-throw shooting at 69 percent.
It is the second straight year a Blue Jacket has been named to the first team. Last year, guard Tommy Lampley was an all-state pick.
Speights, who is 6-foot-10, led the defending state champions to a 25-7 record.
Guard Lewis Lampley, who averaged 11 points and 6.1 assists, was picked honorable mention a second straight season.
