THONOTOSASSA - A sheriff's deputy shot a dog that tried to attack as he arrested a jail escapee Wednesday morning, authorities said.
Hillsborough County Animal Services said the chow chow was shot several times and died at the scene.
Kimberly A. Diamond, 28, of 11003 Hannaway Drive, Riverview, was arrested and taken back to the Orient Road Jail. A deputy had taken Diamond from jail to a Social Security office on Dec. 9, but she slipped away during a visit with a case worker, officials said.
Deputies showed up at 10208 Judy Road in Thonotosassa around 10 a.m. Wednesday looking for Diamond. No one answered the door at the mobile home, but deputies heard someone moving around inside, said sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter.
Other deputies were called to the scene, and Diamond ran out the back door and into a nearby mobile home at 10226 Judy Road, Carter said. The brown chow chow "came running out and charged at one of the deputies," Carter said.
Diamond had been arrested on Nov. 25 and charged with driving with a revoked license as a habitual offender. Records show she was sentenced to six months in jail.
Jail records show that Diamond had been arrested seven other times in Hillsborough since July 2002, on charges that included robbery and four different arrests for driving with a canceled, suspended or revoked license.
