New manatee count down notably from winter's

By Times Staff Writer
Published April 8, 2005

Federal wildlife officials counted just 81 manatees on Wednesday when they flew an aerial survey over Citrus waters.

That number is far below the totals throughout the winter season. The official manatee wintering season ended March 31 when sanctuaries throughout Kings Bay and area canals were deactivated. Thirty-two of the manatees seen this week were in Kings Bay, eight in the Crystal River, three in the Salt River, 33 in the discharge canal of the Progress Energy power plant, two in the Homosassa Blue Waters and three in the lower Homosassa River, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reported.
