Marjorie Park Yacht Basin reopens after renovations

DAVIS ISLANDS - The newly renovated Marjorie Park Yacht Basin, at 115 Columbia Drive, opened Saturday. The $5.1-million in renovations to the 78-year-old yacht basin included dredging, installing new floating boat slips, repairing the seawall, constructing a new fueling station and sewer pump-out station, and refurbishing the old power squadron.

The city constructed 32 monthly rental boat slips and 22 temporary slips. A new waterfront park also provides scenic views of Seddon Channel.

Yacht's passengers can view Air Fest

MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE - View the high-flying Thunderbirds at this weekend's Air Fest 2005 from the deck of the 180-foot Yacht StarShip. Up to 300 guests can board the dining ship for brunch and dancing to Luna Soleil on the promenade deck.

Boarding begins at noon on Saturday and Sunday at 603 Channelside Drive. Cruises are scheduled to return by 4:30 p.m. Cost is $39.95. Reservations are required. Visit www.yachtstarship.com or call 223-7999.

Newly opened art studio in Ybor offering classes

YBOR CITY - Art classes are forming at the city of Tampa's new Ybor Art Studio at 1800 E Eighth Ave. at Centennial Park.

Mayor Pam Iorio and Tampa City Council members were on hand for Saturday's opening, which included art activities and exhibits by local artists Elio Lopez, James Dykins and Patricia Aguero.

Construction began on the studio last May and cost the city $88,590. The Ybor City Development Corp. contributed $15,000 to purchase studio equipment. Classes include pottery, silversmithing, jewelry, watercolor painting, drawing and acrylic painting.

Community mural features local landmarks

SULPHUR SPRINGS - City and community leaders gathered Saturday to dedicate a community mural by artist Mike Parker at Rowlett Park, 2401 E Yukon St. The mural, painted on a racquetball court, depicts local landmarks such as the Spring Theatre and the Sulphur Springs Water Tower.

The mural is a project of Community Stepping Stones, a nonprofit group in partnership with the University of South Florida's School of Art and Art History, which teaches art to children in Sulphur Springs.
