  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Savannah Court

By MICHAEL CANNING
Published April 8, 2005

LOCATION: New cul-de-sac called Savannah Court, just off Bay Avenue and Interbay Boulevard.

DEVELOPER: Alan Development

DESCRIPTION: Seven-home subdivision. Each house has two stories, ranging from 2,500 to 2,800 square feet. All have four bedrooms, 21/2 or 31/2 bathrooms and a garage.

PRICE: $489,000 to $575,000.

AMENITIES: Paver block sidewalks and driveways, hardwood floors on the first floor, 10-foot ceilings, crown molding, granite kitchen counter tops and patios.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: "We tried to do something that is unique," developer Alan Johnson said of the floor plans, which he designed. Most have two-story great rooms with overlooking bridges that connect the two wings of the second story, plus two-story entrance atriums. The name is the brainchild of Johnson and development partner Greg Arbutine, a silverware dealer. "There's actually a silver pattern called Savannah," Johnson said.

TIMELINE: The first house is expected to be done by the end of the month, Johnson said. Construction on four of the other houses will start in May and end by October. Work on the final two houses should begin in June and be completed by the end of the year or early 2006.

MOVE-IN DATE: The first house will be ready for occupancy by the end of the month. The other houses are for sale.
