  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Remove fax server option to stop e-mail error messages

Q. Can you provide insight regarding the following error messages when I compose an e-mail to send within Outlook 2003 (standard edition)? The messages are: FXSAPI.DLL not found, may be corrected by reinstallation. I click OK and the popup window closes. A separate error popup window then opens, with the message: add-in fxsext32.dll could not be installed or loaded; may be corrected by using detect & repair. I click OK and the popup window closes. The mail is sent normally after the popup windows are manually closed. I have tried detect and repair and reinstalling, to no avail. I have tried to find these dynamic link files, to no avail. Other than the error windows opening, the system seems to work normally.

A. FXSAPI.DLL is the Microsoft FAX server. You can go to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs, and click Add/Remove Windows Components. Uncheck the Fax Services to remove the Fax service, and you no longer should get the error message.

Printer errors may be traced to parallel port setting

Q. When I try to open the toolbox for my HP Deskjet 712C printer to use the cleaning and alignment procedures, I get a message saying, "Printer Driver Problem, data required by the printer driver cannot be found or has been corrupted. Restart Windows and try printing again." Restarting makes no difference, and the HP Web site has confirmed I have all the updates for this printer. I am running Windows 2000, and I have run all the maintenance tools: CHKDSK, defrag, disk clean up, Spybot and Ad-aware.

A. You may need to uninstall and then reinstall the driver (this time directly from the HP support site). But first, try this old trick: Try changing the parallel port setting in the BIOS from B-Directional to ECP. If still no luck, keep this setting and then try the driver uninstall/reinstall. To enter the system BIOS area, most PCs will display upon boot which F key is necessary to press, usually F1 or F2. Navigate through the settings until you find the parallel port setting. Check the documentation that came with your system's motherboard.

AVG antivirus is fine, but lacks tech support

Q. When I took my new PC in to a service tech to have all of my old software loaded onto my new system, the service tech/shop owner recommended I use AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition rather than McAfee, which is what I had been using on my old system. He indicated he has used AVG in his shop for more than four years with excellent results. I am now using AVG. In retrospect, I'm a bit concerned about that decision, as I've never even heard of AVG. What are your thoughts? Would you recommend I stick with AVG or go back to McAfee? Or ditch both and go with another antivirus program?

A. AVG Antivirus from Grisoft (www.grisoft.com) has its share of fans. In fact, I use it on one of my extra PCs. I'm not sure I would use it on my main PC, mostly because there is no support for the free version of AVG. If you stay with it, make sure you keep it and its virus definitions up to date.

WildTangent came from Instant Messenger installation

Q. Ever since I tried to sign up for the improved AOL Instant Messenger, I have had problems. Every instant message I send is double printed. I ran Spybot and got five WildTangent entries. I selected Fix, and halfway though the process it stopped and gave me a message: "Application failed because wdengine.dll not found. Reinstall may fix." I am at a loss as to what this means.

A. It means WildTangent has been partly uninstalled using a spyware remover like Spybot. You most likely obtained WildTangent from installing AOL's Instant Messenger 5.5 and above. Try reinstalling AIM with AIM Games Support, then uninstall WildTangent in Add/Remove programs.
