CHICAGO - Jeromy Burnitz is still getting used to windy Wrigley Field, and Adam Eaton and the Padres benefited from his inexperience.
Eaton outpitched Ryan Dempster for six innings, and the San Diego Padres took advantage of Burnitz's error to beat the Cubs 1-0 Monday.
Eaton and Dempster each allowed four hits, but the Padres scored an unearned run in the sixth when Burnitz, Sammy Sosa's replacement in rightfield, dropped Brian Giles' low line drive.
Ryan Klesko then doubled off the rightfield wall, and Giles scored one out later on Ramon Hernandez's groundout.
"There's really no feeling worse than a defensive play that costs the team," said Burnitz, who struck out three times, twice to end an inning with runners in scoring position.
"That's the worst feeling that there is for me."
Eaton struck out three without walking a batter, and Scott Linebrink and Akinori Otsuka each gave up a hit in one inning of relief before Trevor Hoffman finished the six-hitter for his first save.
"Eaton was okay with his pitch count, but he worked pretty hard the outing before," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "His spot was coming up in the order and those three guys were fresh and ready to go."
Eaton wanted to stay in after throwing just 86 pitches, but understood Bochy's reasoning.
"I wasn't happy about coming out," he said.
"But I knew those three guys were coming in and you feel pretty good about that one-run lead, especially with the way they've been throwing."
BRAVES 11, NATIONALS 2: Mike Hampton pitched eight strong innings and Rafael Furcal and Andruw Jones hit two-run homers for host Atlanta. This was nothing new for the team formerly known as the Montreal Expos. Last season, the Braves beat Montreal 15 of 19 times and they've won 10 of the last 11 series between the teams.
METS 8, ASTROS 4: Kaz Matsui hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the eighth inning as New York won its home opener.
Matsui also drove in a run with a bunt single, Tom Glavine pitched six solid innings and Jose Reyes used his speed to send the Mets to their second straight victory after an 0-5 start.
Houston's Andy Pettitte heard plenty of boos in his return to New York. The left-hander pitched nine seasons for the Yankees from 1995-2003 and helped them win four World Series titles. He allowed three runs and nine hits in 51/3 innings.
PHILLIES 4, MARLINS 1: Pat Burrell hit a two-run homer into the upper deck in the first inning, extending his streak of at least one RBI in every game for visiting Philadelphia. Burrell's fourth homer gave him 17 RBIs, most in the major leagues and five shy of the team record for April, set by Von Hayes in 1989.
D'BACKS 2, ROCKIES 0: Brad Halsey, making his first start for host Arizona, struck out a career-best seven and pitched six-plus scoreless innings. The Rockies are off to the worst start in their 13-year history. The crowd of 18,742 was the smallest for an Arizona home game in the franchise's eight seasons.
BREWERS 6, PIRATES 2: Russell Branyan homered twice off Kip Wells for host Milwaukee. The sellout crowd at Miller Park included new owner Mark Attanasio.
