Student hit by car, in serious condition

A 6-year-old boy was hit early today while crossing a street near his St. Petersburg elementary school.

A kindergartner was struck by a car Tuesday morning crossing a street near Fairmount Park Elementary, 575 41st St. S, in St. Petersburg. Police said E'traveon Cordae Johnson was crossing 5th Avenue S when he was struck by an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme driven by Tony Young, 37, of St. Petersburg.

School officials said Johnson rode the bus to school and ate breakfast there but then, for reasons still unknown, ran from campus and across the busy street.

He was taken to Bayfront Medical in critical condition, then transferred to All Children's Hospital to undergo surgery.

Police said Young attempted to avoid the collision by swerving and braking but the right front of his car hit the boy. Young is not facing charges, police said. The accident occurred about 100 yards from the school, just as classes were starting at 8:40 a.m. No further details were available.
