Plan appeals to NHL, union

When NHL labor talks resume, a new plan will be up for discussion that attempts to blend elements from both sides' vision of how players will be paid.
Negotiations probably will resume next week, during which a hybrid concept - which addresses the relationship between player costs and league revenues - will be brought to the table, a source close to the negotiations told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday.
The NHL prefers a link tying player costs to league revenues, while the union has rejected that. This new, mixed plan appears to incorporate elements from both.
JAGR RE-SIGNS: Jaromir Jagr has re-signed with Russian team Avangard Omsk, which he led to victory in the inaugural European Champions Cup in January, and will play there if the NHL lockout extends to next season.

The Nextel Cup's season-ending race at Homestead-Miami Speedway will finish in prime time after installation of an $8-million lighting system. Work on the lights at the 1.5-mile oval will begin immediately and be completed for the season finales of NASCAR's top three series Nov.17-20, track president Curtis Gray said.
INDY 500: Andretti Green Racing's team of defending IRL champion Tony Kanaan, Dan Wheldon, Dario Franchitti and Bryan Herta has eight cars among the 69 entries for the May 29 race.

Trainer fired
The owner of Sweet Catomine has fired the filly's trainer, days after she finished fifth as the favorite in the Santa Anita Derby. Martin Wygod transferred five horses, including Sweet Catomine, from Julio Canani to trainer John Shirreffs this week.
ARKANSAS DERBY: Rockport Harbor will skip the $1-million race next weekend and instead aim for the Lexington Stakes April 23 at Keeneland to qualify for the Kentucky Derby. An infected baseball-sized blood clot was discovered in the horse's neck April2, forcing several missed workouts.

FAMILY CIRCLE CUP: Second-seeded Elena Dementieva overcame early jitters to beat Alina Jidkova 6-4, 6-4 in the second round in Charleston, S.C.
