Singer/songwriter Anne E. DeChant brings her folk/country/pop style of music to St. Petersburg starting Friday (4/15). She talked with tbt* about music and the Vagina Monologues.
Tell me about your new album Pop the Star. What about the album as a whole and what it means to you.
It is the CD that definitely reflects what I do. There are some ballads and there are some more up-tempo sassy songs, so it really covers the basis of me as a performer.
What does the title Pop the Star mean?
It's a reference to managers who tell you they're gonna introduce (you) to mainstream and "pop the star," getting all excited and having high hopes, but you don't see any results.
With the music industry the way it is these days, would you consider signing to a major label if the opportunity arose?
The ultimate goal is to get your music to as many people as possible. Whether it's a large company or a small one, I don't care. But anything that could help me play bigger venues I would do. I don't have a set of rules; except selling out. I don't want to sell out.
What was it like to be in the Vagina Monologues?
It was great. The first night I remember thinking, "You idiot! Why did you say you'd do this?" But it was a great challenge and experience. We had a lot of fun with the troupe and got real close. Actually when they went to California they had (Queer as Folk's) Sharon Gless guest speak and they gave her my tape, and one day she actually called me up to tell me she thought I was doing wonderful and we ended up talking for half an hour!
Plus, I got equity actor's pay so I got a ton of money to do something fun and new.
One last question. What does the E. in your name stand for?
Elizabeth.

Nice story, and Anne E's music tour of St. Petersburg was awesome.
"GREAT TALENT" both as a writer and performer. Especially liked her ballads Estelle and Rosalita. Powerful voice and amazing things to say in her lyrics.
