Superlatives abound, from the biggest black college reunion, to the most prestigious art show to the largest book fair. You might as well join the crowd.
Daytona Beach
Black College Reunion 2005 (4/16-18) It's been called the king of black spring break events because 150,000 to 200,000 people converge in Daytona for beach parties, concerts sponsored by BET and street festivals. But the most popular activity is just walking along Atlantic Avenue, checking out the people and the huge customized car show along the strip.
Walla Walla, Wash.
The best new wine destination: If you just got the DVD of Sideways and think it's time for a wine tasting trip somewhere, consider the town with the funny name and the great wine. Life in Walla Walla has been transformed lately by the wine industry. Some of America's best vintages are now made here. In 1990, only five wineries were operating there. By 2004, there were 59, producing cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and merlot, but also redefining the area with syrah and semillon. The infusion of money has helped remake the town. Restaurants are inventive, and the art scene is growing. The closest big city, Seattle, is a five-hour drive away over a mountain pass, so it remains a small town in many respects. But it seems poised to become the next destination for wine tourism after Napa Valley. The Walla Walla Wine Alliance try saying that three times fast after a couple of chardonnays has a guide to tastings and travel information at www.wallawallawine.com/visit.html .
