Mainsail Arts Festival brings art to the park
The weather's nice and the art is top notch at the 30th annual Mainsail Arts Festival, a juried show of 280 artists from 33 states competing for $50,000 in cash awards. It runs 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday 4/16 and Sunday at Vinoy Park, Fifth Avenue NE and Bayshore Drive in downtown St. Petersburg. There are children's art activities and food by area restaurants.

No More Homeless Pets in Hillsborough County presents a Pet Adoption Expo on Saturday 4/16 with more than 30 dog and cat rescue groups and shelters on site with adoptable pets and educational materials. Even if you already have a four-legged companion, you can check it out for the pet contests, booths selling pet-related merchandise and the pet photographer. Jazz in the Garden What a great excuse to while away a Sunday afternoon. Sunken Gardens hosts a fundraiser with live music, art, dance, mimes, books and authors to benefit the Midtown St. Petersburg Sanderlin Center and Ebony Scholars. Friday Night Jam Session The coffee shop and art gallery Romeo's Studio in Ybor City is kind of a tribute to the beatnik era with poetry readings and art shows. Every Friday night, its jam session opens up the microphone from 8 p.m. to midnight. Most of the shop's regular performers step up to play, including a Latin rock group A Limine, and the blues and rock-inspired sessions can get pretty lively. Before Sex and the City brought a woman's funny take on modern life there were Cynthia, Rita and Cleo in A Girl's Guide to Chaos. The trio was the 1980s creation of Cynthia Heimel, a humorist whose books include Get Your Tongue Out of My Mouth , I'm Kissing You Goodbye and When Your Phone Doesn't Ring,It'll Be Me.
