Dog, lost three months, is reunited with his owner

JACKSONVILLE - Bigg Dogg scampered away more than three months ago when his owners' sport utility vehicle flipped on an interstate highway.

The brown and black Pekingese-Chihuahua mix remained missing until he was hit by a car that shattered his hips Saturday.

Animal lover Betty James took him in after treatment, noticed a telephone number on his collar and called a thrilled Howard and Joyce Saunders in Huntington, W.Va.

Howard Saunders flew to Jacksonville on Tuesday to reclaim his pet.

"Come to daddy," Saunders said. "Oh, my son, oh my, you look so puny."

His wife was at the wheel of their SUV towing a travel trailer when the rig started swaying and she lost control on Interstate 295 on Dec. 30.

"We turned over and were left hanging upside down, held in by our seat belts," her husband said. That's when Bigg Dogg wandered off.

They stuck with their plans to spend three months in Orlando, expecting to hear something. But they heard nothing.

"I just knew he was alive somewhere," Howard Saunders said. "I saved every one of your toys and I fixed up your doghouse," he said. "We're having a homecoming for you."
