TOP FIVE
Current movies recommended by the Times:
1. Millions - A stolen fortune literally drops into the laps of two British lads, who try hard to spend the loot. Directed with uncommon gentility, but expected visual flair by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later).
2. Frank Miller's Sin City - Co-directors Miller and Robert Rodriguez (with help from Quentin Tarantino) create a visually arresting, occasionally nauseating adaptation of a crime-ridden graphic novel.
3. Nobody Knows - Four Japanese children care for themselves after desertion by their mother. Writer-director Hirokazu Koreeda's matter-of-fact approach is more affecting than Hollywood's Home Alone approach to such matters.
4. Dear Frankie - A deaf Scottish boy (Jack McElhone) meets his long-absent "father" (Gerard Butler), actually a stranger hired for the role by his emotionally fragile mother (Emily Mortimer).
5. The Upside of Anger - Joan Allen and Kevin Costner are at the top of their game in a suburban comedy-drama echoing Terms of Endearment.
