Land rules changing to include condo-hotels

TREASURE ISLAND - It's official: condo-hotels and term limits are coming to the city.
City commissioners on Tuesday night voted unanimously to amend the Land Development Regulations to include a definition for condo-hotels, a revised definition of hotels and motels and a new section on how to regulate condo-hotel use in the city.
A condo-hotel is a hotel or motel composed of units owned by an individual, a corporation or "any other legal entity having mandatory membership into an association" of owners within the same development.
The rooms are rented out as transient accommodations on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Hotels and motels are defined the same way, except without rules on ownership.
From requiring a reservation system to allowing owners to stay no more than 90 days in a 12-month period, the commission detailed 14 regulations regarding use.
In other business, the commission voted 4-1 to institute six-year term limits for the city's boards and committees.
This means no appointed member shall serve more than six years, unless there is no "available and qualified candidate" to replace the member at the term's expiration.
The issue went to referendum during the November election and voters said they wanted this change. Mayor Mary Maloof was the only dissenter.
