Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Painter wins Mainsail's Best of Show award

ST. PETERSBURG - John E. Thursby won the $10,000 Best of Show award at the 30th annual Mainsail Arts Festival on Sunday. Judge Irvin Lippman, executive director of the Museum of Art/Ft. Lauderdale, selected Thursby along with 47 other winners who will split an additional $40,000 in prize money, which includes purchase awards.

Thursby, 59, a professor at Central Florida Community College, was the first artist in the festival's history to win the top prize in the medium of painting. It's also his first Best award at Mainsail, though he has won it at other outdoor festivals in Florida. It comes at a good time for him.

"I'm retiring in three weeks," he said, "and I'll be able to paint what I want to, not what I have to."
