TAMPA - The communications system went down at Tampa International Airport on Saturday. Air traffic controllers immediately switched to hand-held radios.
The outage occurred at 1:06 p.m., FAA spokesman Jim Peters said.
He said the control tower was unable to receive communications from pilots. Pilots could hear the controllers.
There were no delays in take-offs and landings, Peters said. Some airplanes, though, had to circle the airport while the tower transitioned to the back up system.
The FAA extended the space between departing and arriving flights as an added precaution.
The system came back on about 6:10 p.m., Peters said. He said technicians are working to identify the problem.

Ramerez, who lived in an apartment at 6041 S West Shore Blvd., was ejected from the car and died at the scene, patrol officers said.
He was not wearing a seat belt.
