Escape School teaches kids how to avoid kidnappers

Bardmoor Elementary School will offer Escape School, a nationally recognized program that teaches children and parents how to recognize the behavior of a would-be idnapper, Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The school is at 8900 Greenbriar Road. Dr. Clayton Wilcox, Pinellas County superintendent of schools, will speak at the Seminole Chamber luncheon Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Banquet Masters. The cost is $12 a person. The Seminole Recreation Department is planning a trip to Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The trip will include stops at Jubilee Junction stores, Aunt Julie's Country Kitchen and Backwater Bill's restaurants, as well as viewing a water show and ice skating "extravaganza." Heritage Village will offer midday tours on the third Wednesdays through May at 1 p.m. The tours offer a stroll through the natural pine and palmetto landscape. Visitors will learn about the county's history and see architectural styles from the county's past. The cost is $3 a person. Heritage Village is at 11909 125th St. N. "Yellow Ribbon Day Saturday" at Seminole United Methodist Church will be held April 30 from from 3 to 6 p.m. The "Day for Our Community to Unite and Pray for Our Troops" will feature an outdoor celebration of support and prayers for troops stationed overseas. Live music will be provided by international recording artist and church member Thomas McCoy and the Thomas McCoy Band. Children's activities include a petting zoo and firetrucks.

Representatives from the Sheriff's Office will make IDs for children. A bloodmobile will be available. A special table will allow families to write a letter to a soldier and send it along with a photo of their whole family.

The church is inviting families who have a member serving in the military overseas, as well as service personnel who have recently returned. The church is at 5400 Seminole Blvd. For more information, call 391-9781.

The St. Petersburg College Students Art Show will be on display at the Seminole Community Library Gallery in April, Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. The library is at 9200 113th St. N. The Tampa Bay Movers and Shakers Support Group will hold its first meeting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Seminole Community Library, 9200 113th St N. The group is open to people with Parkinson's disease under the age of 65, as well as their family members and friends. For more information, call 397-2024.

Chapel on the Hill will present a Bridal Show and Open House on May 4 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Evans Hall, 12601 Park Blvd. Attendees will view new banquet facilities at Evans Hall and meet a team of bridal vendors for a one-stop bridal shopping experience.

The event will feature door prizes every hour, including an early door prize at 5:30 p.m. for early registrants only, as well as live entertainment with a disc jockey, free food sampling, open cash bar, bridal discounts and offers. Registration is required at the door, with early registration available by calling 391-2919 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Register before Tuesday, May 3, to be eligible for an early door prize drawing. Participants must be present to win.

Pinellas County Extension needs volunteers, ages 13 to 18, to help with the county's summer 4-H Youth As Resources (YAR) program. YAR is a youth leadership and workforce development initiative that offers a variety of programs to empower youths to become more involved in the community.

This summer, YAR volunteers will help with planning and implementing various community programs, including a nutrition team, youth and adult partnership training, a community grants board, community forums and other projects. Special YAR projects for the summer include a Web page design class and planning a youth leadership conference, Scoping for Success. Volunteers will be required to attend two days of training, Monday and Tuesday, May 23 and 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the County Extension Building, 12175 125th St.

Typical summer volunteer hours are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To reserve a spot, call 582-2513.
