YMCA sponsors big beach party

The "Biggest Beach Party Ever," sponsored by the North Beaches Branch YMCA, will be held Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m. The free event is open to the public, who may bring beach chairs but are asked not to bring coolers or backpacks. Soda, beer, wine, grilled hot dogs and hot sandwiches will be for sale. The event will take place on the beach between 17th and 18th avenues. A bonfire will be lit just after sunset to illuminate the beach for dancing. For more information, call 595-5610.
Belleair Beach
The Belleair Beach Island Garden Club will meet today at 11:30 a.m. on the Bell Terrace at the Belleair Country Club for a lunch to install new officers. For reservations, call 581-8313 or send a check for $18 to 410 Poinsettia Road, Belleair, FL 33756.
Gulfport
The Gulfport Recreation Center is accepting resident registration applications for this year's Summer Program from May 31 through July 29. Registration hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Recreation Center, 5730 Shore Blvd. S. Summer camp is available for children who have completed kindergarten through age 14. Registration packets are available at the Recreation Center or on the Internet (www.ci.gulfport.fl.us follow links to City Departments, Leisure Services, Rec Center. Madeira Beach
The 12th annual Spring King of the Beach Fishing Tournament, sponsored by the Old Salt Foundation and offering more than $80,000 in cash prizes in a variety of divisions, will be held Thursday through Saturday. Entry fees are $165 for members and $185 for nonmembers. A captain's party and meeting will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Madeira Beach Ball Field, 200 Rex Place. Entries must be paid and registered before Saturday, when fishing starts at 6 a.m. with weigh-ins conducted between 4 and 5 p.m. Contestants can leave from any port and bring their fish by boat or car. Eligible species are limited to king mackerel and they must measure at least 30 inches from nose to fork and be caught with hand-held rods and reels. Redington Beach
The Redington Beach Property Owners Association Inc. (RBPOA) is offering a $1,000, scholarship and two $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who live in Redington Beach. Applicants must submit a one-page cover letter that includes name, address, current high school, high school accomplishments and future educational plans, as well as a 500-word essay titled "Challenges of Being a Teenager in Today's Society." St. Pete Beach
The city Recreation Department is sponsoring a "Hooked on Fishing" Fish-A-Thon beginning at 8 a.m. April 27 at Merry Pier. There is no charge to enter, and bait will be supplied. Participants must bring their own fishing tackle. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest, smallest and ugliest fish and the biggest catch. There is no entry fee. The event is open to all. The Recreation Department's first photo contest will end May 1. The theme is "What I Like Best About St. Pete Beach." Winning photos will be displayed in one of the city's recreation facilities. Winners will also receive a gift certificate for a recreation class of their choice. Photographs, which will not be returned, should be submitted in person at 7701 Boca Ciega Drive. St. John Vianney Catholic School will hold its annual auction Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall, 500 84th Ave. Carrabba's will sponsor and cater the event, which will include silent and live auctions. Tickets are $25 a person. For more information, call JoEllen Sauer at 343-7541.
Treasure Island
A special tour of new and historic Treasure Island homes will be held May 22 from 1 to 5 p.m. as part of the city's "T.I. Five O Celebration." Buses for the 50th anniversary tour will begin at the Treasure Island Tennis and Yacht Club. Special tour guides will provide historic information. After the tour, a reception at the club will feature a film on city history. The event is open to the public. Children younger than 12, cameras or beach attire will not be allowed. Tickets cost $20 each and can be purchased at City Hall, Benjamin's, Jacqueline's Salon, Bank of America, Fifth Third Bank or Books and Bagels, or by mail (add a $2 handling fee) after calling 360-2366. Checks should be payable to event sponsor Treasure Island Business Association. The event will be held rain or shine.
Treasure Island's 50th anniversary celebration will kick off at 6 p.m. May 3 at the City Hall Auditorium, 120 108th Ave., before the scheduled commission meeting. Refreshments will be served. Mayor Mary Maloof will read a proclamation acknowledging the city's 50th year of incorporation and recognize TI Five-O Celebration committee members. 50th Anniversary Commemorative Posters are for sale ($40) at the Recreation Department, 120 108th Ave., and at all TI Five-O events throughout May. The colorful poster, designed by Treasure Island artist Ruth Philipon, shows four distinct Treasure Island lifestyle scenes.
