Rumor mill

What's the best way to follow the NFL draft with all the wheeling and dealing that could take place before Saturday? We'll keep you updated on the latest rumors and developments from league insiders as reported by various news organizations).
If the Bucs want Utah quarterback Alex Smith, they will have to strike a deal with the 49ers for the No.1 overall pick.
San Francisco appears to want Smith. But having failed to reach an agreement after four days of negotiations, the 49ers have contacted nine teams in an effort to trade the pick, ESPN.com reported.
It seems 49ers coach Mike Nolan gauged there was so much interest in teams trading with Miami at No.2 for Smith, he wants all the action to come through San Francisco. It's unlikely the Bucs would want to pay the fortune in draft picks it would take to get Smith at No. 1. The Vikings might be willing to go to the top by offering their two first-round choices, but only for Michigan receiver Braylon Edwards.
Where Cal quarterback Aaron Rodgers will fall is anyone's guess. If he gets past Miami at No.2 and Cleveland at No.3, he won't go to the Bears at No.4, leaving the Bucs with a monumental decision.
The Bucs, who already have explored trading for Bills running back Travis Henry, still might have some interest in moving up to No.2 even if Smith is not there. The reason? Edwards and Auburn running back Ronnie Brown would be.
What happens if the Bucs wind up with a quarterback in Round 1? Look for them to recoup some picks by dealing quarterback Chris Simms, possibly to Cleveland, SI.com reported.
