Pinellas to use $5.9-million in grant funds to help airport

By Times Staff Writer

CLEARWATER - Pinellas County Commissioners have voted to divert about $5.9-million in Florida Department of Transportation grant funds to aid St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport.

On Tuesday, commissioners agreed to shift $3.9-million earmarked for airport expansion to offset a loss in operating revenues. And $2-million will fund at least 75 hangars for noncommercial aircraft on the airport's northeast side.

That proposed project, which is in its early planning stages, is estimated at about $5.5-million.

The commission also voted to let no-fee zones in St. Petersburg, Safety Harbor and Pinellas Park expire at the end of the month and increase transportation impact fees by 13 percent countywide.

Developers will have to pay for traffic improvements in three business districts but will be eligible for discounts to offset the fees if they build pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly projects that reduce traffic.
