POETRY EVENT: Celebrate National Poetry Month with a free poetry workshop today from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Clearwater Main Library, 100 N Osceola Ave. Poet Lois Roma-Deeley will present the workshop, which includes reading from her work, a writing exercise and the opportunity to share poetry.

BOOK SALE: Palm Harbor Friends of the Library presents a bargain book sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Saturday. The library is at 2330 Nebraska Ave., Palm Harbor. Prices begin at 10 cents for used magazines and books. Proceeds benefit the library. Call 784-3332.

BOOK READING: Author Kerry Sheridan will discuss her book Bagpipe Brothers: The FDNY Band's True Story of Tragedy, Mourning, and Recovery, today at 6:30 p.m. at Tarpon Springs Heritage Museum at Craig Park, 100 Beekman Lane. Sheridan's book covers the ordeal of the massive number of funerals after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the importance of recovering bodies in Irish-American culture, and modern and traditional bagpiping ritual. CONCERT: A candlelight concert, "For the Beauty of the Earth - Music for Pipe Organ, Choral Scholars and Flute," will be today at 7:30 p.m. at Church of the Ascension, 701 Orange Ave., Clearwater. Outstanding pipe organ and flute students ages 9 to 16 will be featured. The Clearwater Choral Scholars will sing a cappella music of the 16th and 20th centuries, and favorites by John Rutter. Beth Hunter, organist-choirmaster at Ascension, will perform on the 49-bell Dutch carillon at 7 p.m. and will conclude the concert with Carillon-Sortie and Toccata played on the Letourneau pipe organ. The concert is free, with an offering for the young musicians scholarship fund.

HABITAT BEACH PARTY: Habitat for Humanity will host a benefit concert and beach party Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m. at Sunset Beach in Tarpon Springs. There will be door prizes, food, music, a silent auction and a live auction. Tickets are $25 per person for food and beverage (adults only) and live entertainment. Tickets can be purchased at Staples in Tarpon Springs (U.S. 19 and Tarpon Avenue), Habitat for Humanity in Dunedin (738-1652) or Habitat for Humanity in St. Petersburg (536-4755).

BIG BAND MUSIC: The Knights of Columbus, 2040 Grand Blvd., Holiday, will host Frank Parsons and his 15-piece swing band Saturday. Dinner will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m., with dancing and entertainment from 7 to 10 p.m. The cost is $10. Call 934-8025 for reservations or group tables.

PARROT PARTY: Old Palm Harbor Main Street will sponsor the fourth annual Parrot Head Party onSaturday, from 4 to 11 p.m. The event, cosponsored by the Tampa Bay Parrot Heads In Paradise Club, includes a concert by an 11-piece Jimmy Buffett cover band, the Caribbean Chillers, and a Cheeseburgers in Paradise cookoff. FILM SERIES: The film Friendly Persuasion starring Gary Cooper, Dorothy McGuire, Anthony Perkins and Marjorie Main will be shown as part of the Sol Peska Film Series sponsored by the Friends of the Tarpon Springs Library on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Tarpon Springs Cultural Center, 101 South Pinellas Ave. Admission is free.

STUDENT EXHIBITION: The Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art presents dual exhibitions, "Hoang Van-Bui: Homefronts" and "Who We Are," an accompanying exhibition by area high school students under his direction. Students from East Lake High School, Palm Harbor University High School and Tarpon Springs High School participated in the program. The exhibitions run through Sunday. The reception is free to museum members, $10 for nonmembers. Light refreshments will be served.

"AUNTIE MAME': Francis Wilson Playhouse, 302 Seminole St., Clearwater, presents Auntie Mame, the original rollicking comical romp, through May 1. Auntie Mame was written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. The cost is $14 for adults and $10 for students. For reservations, call 446-1360.

ART EXHIBIT: The Dunedin Fine Art Center's annual student, member and faculty exhibitions will open with a reception and awards ceremony tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibitions close on May 13. These exhibitions offer an opportunity for current members or students to exhibit their best work. The work is displayed along with the work of the center's faculty members. ART EXHIBIT: "Images of My Imagination" by artist Karen Mason of Largo will be at the Packinghouse Gallery, 10900 Oakhurst Road, Largo, today through June 30. An artist's reception will be tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 596-7822.

ART EXHIBIT: Painted Fish Gallery, 350 Main St., Dunedin, will show landscapes and paintings of coastal life by gallery owner Bill Renc, and circular stained-glass windows depicting butterfly and insect life by Diana Eagles, through May 29. An artists' open house will be Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

HISTORIC HOUSE TOUR: The historic Plumb House Museum, 1380 Martin Luther King Ave. S, Clearwater, will hold an open house and free tours from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the first and third Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays in April. ART EXHIBIT: Work by artists from VSA Arts of Florida and Creative Clay will exhibit their work at the Clearwater Main Library, 100 N Osceola Ave., through Wednesday. VSA Arts of Florida is a nonprofit organization whose aim is to enable people with disabilities to learn and participate in the arts. The aim of Creative Clay in St. Petersburg is to make the arts accessible to everyone through arts programs. ART EXHIBIT: "Saso in Spring," an exhibit of work by Clearwater artist Frank Saso, is on display through April 29 at the art gallery in Oldsmar City Hall, 100 State St. Among Saso's previous work is a commemorative painting of the 1991 Gulf War that hangs in the Pentagon.
