BROOKSVILLE - It's hard enough being a parent and trying to deal with all the trials that come with the job. So, to help make parenthood a more rewarding experience, the final Parent Institute of this school year will offer resources, information and tools for parents to help their children succeed.
"As a parent, I wouldn't want to miss out on learning about the programs that are available and the tricks of the parental trade that help promote positive family relationships," said Sharon Mechler, the exceptional-student education parent liaison for the Hernando County school district.
On Tuesday, parents will be able to select two of the eight workshops offered on a variety of topics: reading, hyperactivity, health issues, autism 101, behavior/discipline techniques, adolescent transitional years, anger management and drug and alcohol prevention. All sessions will be translated into Spanish.
The word has spread, after the previous Parent Institute, that the evening is not only packed with sound, useful information, but is fun, free and includes food, according to Mechler.
The night includes a complimentary Chick-fil-A dinner and door prizes - such as literacy baskets packed with books and gadgets that are educational and fun.
Exhibitors will be on hand to show the kind of resources that are available in the community to help parents. For example, the HEART Literacy program will provide information for adults who wish to get their GED. And the Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System will showcase the services it provides for children, whether the child has a physical, learning or behavioral impairment.
"Parents will leave with the information and skills needed to implement an action plan for their families immediately," said Mechler. "By providing an opportunity like this, parents and school personnel can effectively work together to help students throughout their school years."
