AFC East: Grading the draft

MIAMIDOLPHINS
First selection (Round 1, No. 2 overall): RONNIE BROWN, RB, Auburn
Height: 6-0 Weight: 233
Scouting report: The sudden retirement of Ricky Williams before last season meant the Dolphins were compelled to get a franchise running back this year. They might have. Brown, the tandemmate of Carnell Williams at Auburn, is bruising and will be able to carry the load 20 to 30 times a game. He can give new coach Nick Saban the consistency on offense he needs to get Miami to buy into his new system.
Other selections: MATT ROTH, DE, Iowa; CHANNING CROWDER, ILB, Florida.
Grade: A
NEWYORKJETS
First selection (Round 2, No. 47 overall): MIKE NUGENT, PK, Ohio State
Height: 5-10 Weight: 182
Scouting report: Coach Herm Edwards gave kicker Doug Brien a vote of confidence a few months ago, but it's clear the Jets wanted to upgrade their kicking game. Taking Nugent, by far the best kicker in college, solves that problem and ultimately means the end for Brien. In 2004, Nugent converted 20-of-23 attempts and ended his Ohio State career with 81 consecutive extra points. But a kicker with your first pick?
Other selections: JUSTIN MILLER, DB, Clemson; SIONE POUHA, DT, Utah.
Grade: B+
NEWENGLANDPATRIOTS
First selection (Round 1, No. 32 overall): LOGAN MANKINS, G, Fresno State
Height: 6-4 Weight: 307
Scouting report: Once again, the Patriots go the unconventional route. Mankins played left tackle at Fresno State but is expected to move inside. He can play both positions. His bulk suits their mashing style and his unheralded reputation plays into their team-first concept.
Other selections: ELLIS HOBBS, CB, Iowa State; NICK KACZUR, OT, Toledo.
Grade: B-
BUFFALOBILLS
First selection (Round 2, No. 55 overall): ROSCOE PARRISH, WR, Miami
Height: 5-9 Weight: 168
Scouting report: Sure, the Bills had needs on the offensive line and at tight end, but when you have to wait for 54 players to be selected, you may just have to go with the most explosive. That's Parrish. He is fast. Very fast. He knows how to get in the end zone as a receiver and returner and brings some of the Miami swagger that the Bills could use.
Other selections: KEVIN EVERETT, TE, Miami.
Grade: C
