INVERNESS - The widening of U.S. 41 S between State Road 44 and Watson Street is scheduled to begin today and last until spring 2007.
Between SR 44 and Eden Drive, crews will widen the highway to six lanes. Between Eden and Watson, the road will be widened to four lanes.
The construction cost will be $13.7-million, the state Department of Transportation reported. That does not include the costs of engineering or acquiring right of way.
Crews already have been handling utility relocation, DOT spokeswoman Kris Carson said. In the project's early stages, workers will build retention ponds.
There will be lane closures on U.S. 41 S, but contractor C.W. Roberts Contracting of Hosford must adhere to some contractual guidelines.
North of Eden, there can be no lane closures between 6:30 a.m. and 9 p.m.; south of Eden, no lane closures are allowed between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m.
The project calls for crews to build sidewalks along the highway.
COUNTY ROADS 491 and 486: County government announced Friday that the widening projects on these roads are progressing.
The widening of CR 491 between CR 486 and Pine Ridge Boulevard is 57 percent finished, and crews still hope to wrap up by April 2006, a county government news release said. This stretch of CR 491 will have sidewalks on both sides through the commercial areas, and a sidewalk on one side of the road in noncommercial areas.
Estimated cost of the project: $11.7-million. So far, the project is under budget, the county reported.
Crews are widening CR 486 between Forest Ridge Boulevard and U.S. 41 N. That project also is under the $20-million budget so far, the county reported.
The contractor is working on water, sewer and stormwater facilities. Essex Avenue in Citrus Hills remains closed, but is set to open in early May.
Work is still scheduled to be completed by December 2006.
