LAKELAND -- A hospice resident died in a fire that was started because he was smoking in bed, officials said Monday.

The Sunday fire at LifePath Hospice was contained to the room of Fred Schultz, 62, Lakeland Fire spokeswoman Cheryl Edwards said.

The facility's sprinkler system put out the fire, and firefighters found Schultz's body in the room when they entered, Edwards said. The medical examiner's office was waiting for the results of toxicology tests to determine the cause of death.

A second hospice resident was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital, and three others were evacuated from the building, Edwards said.
