Cyclist rescued from Alafia park

A man mountain biking through the state park outside Tampa Tuesday morning flipped over his handlebars and fell 30 feet.

TAMPA - A man mountain biking through Alafia River State Park Tuesday morning flipped over the handlebars and fell 30 feet, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

A park ranger called for help after the bicyclist fell, and fire rescue workers arrived for what they call a "wilderness rescue."

The park, 10 miles southeast of Tampa in Lithia, is the former site of a phosphate mine. A state parks Web site notes that the reclaimed land offers "some of the most radical elevation changes in Florida."

Rescuing the man, whose name was not immediately released, proved to be an arduous, delicate task - with rescue workers treating him where he fell, then carefully pulling him out as a helicopter stood by.

"He is alive, and they're bringing him out," said fire rescue spokesman Ray Yeakley.
