ST. PETERSBURG - Detectives arrested a man Tuesday who is accused of using his vehicle to try to run over a police officer.

Officer Robert E. Jones attempted to stop Terrance T. Keaton, 25, after he ran a red light about 3 p.m. at Fifth Avenue N and 34th Street, according to police reports.

Keaton continued south on 34th Street, refusing to stop, police said. He crossed Central Avenue and then sped away.

After checking records, officers located Keaton in an alley behind 4412 13th Ave. S. Keaton got in his vehicle and drove it at the officers, police said. He intentionally hit Jones' motorcycle, throwing the officer 9 feet, police reports state. Keaton then fled the scene.

Officers tracked him to his grandmother's house at 4321 11 Ave. S, where detectives took him into custody without incident. He remained in the Pinellas County Jail Tuesday night on charges of attempted homicide of a police officer, fleeing and eluding and driving with a suspended or revoked license, according to court records. Jones was treated and released from a hospital Tuesday afternoon.
