CORAL GABLES - Kyle Wright has his first win at Miami.
Wright, long touted as a player who would add to Miami's legacy as "Quarterback U," will open the 2005 season as the starter.
Coach Larry Coker announced Tuesday that the 6-foot-5, 208-pound sophomore beat out talented freshman Kirby Freeman for the job vacated by Brock Berlin. Barring some surprise, Wright will lead Miami into its Sept.5 opener at rival Florida State.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Georgia Tech junior point guard Jarrett Jack will declare for the NBA draft but will not immediately hire an agent, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
TELEVISION: College Sports Television reached an agreement with the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to televise football, basketball and other sports from the traditionally black schools in each conference.
TRACK: Florida State's Walter Dix was named United States Track and Field Coaches Association Athlete of the Week after winning the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes and competing in the winning 4x100 relay at Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Tallahassee.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Colorado hired Tulsa's Kathy McConnell-Miller to replace Ceal Barry.
WOMEN'S GOLF: Freshman Tiffany Chudy, named to the 2005 All-SEC second team after shooting 229 and finishing in a tie for 19th at the league championships, will lead Florida into the NCAA women's golf regional May 5-7 at the University of Florida Golf Course in Gainesville. Miami also qualified for the event. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each region to the championship finals May 17-20 in Sunriver, Oregon.
