A commissioner's excesses

A Times Editorial
Published April 28, 2005

Brian Blair hasn't made the transition from wrestler to politician. Not six months on the job, Hillsborough's new county commissioner has popped off on a range of subjects he knows little about, from ethics to health care to public administration.

Every new officeholder makes mistakes. But Blair seems blind, almost indignant, to the need for thoughtful governing. He tried to bully the staff into embracing his idea for privatizing indigent health care. In the latest outburst, he announced his willingness to fire the county administrator for comments he took as criticism.

This intemperance makes his detractors gloat, but it weakens a board that oversees Florida's fourth-largest county. The ex-Killer Bee needs to become a worker bee - and think before spewing criticism.
