Daily fishing report
By CHUCK ROGERS
Published April 28, 2005
Weather still seems to be the major topic of conversation among area anglers. The winds calmed a little last week but this week kicked back up. In addition, the wind direction has not been consistent.
Constant cold fronts coupled with warm days in between still have the snook in transition. The 72-degree water temperature north of the Pier has helped the bite. Most feeding has been in the afternoon on the turn of the tide.
South of the Pier, the water temperature has been as low as 69 degrees. This quick drop from 74 degrees last week has slowed the snook bite. But there are still plenty of slot reds and monster trout being caught in the shallow flats. Top-water bait and soft plastics worked over and through the grass are producing daily limits.
This weekend looks to be promising. Forecasts call for warmer weather and lighter winds. With the warmer temperatures, the fishing should stabilize.
Look for bait to return to the flats and the clarity to improve. Keep your eyes peeled for cobia cruising the flats. Several large fish have been seen as far north as the Courtney Campbell Parkway.
