TOP FIVE

Current movies recommended by the Times:

1. Millions - A stolen fortune literally drops into the laps of two British lads, who try hard to spend the loot. Directed with uncommon gentility, but expected visual flair, by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later).

2. Frank Miller's Sin City - Co-directors Miller and Robert Rodriguez (with help from Quentin Tarantino) create a visually arresting, occasionally nauseating, adaptation of a crime-ridden graphic novel.

3. The Ballad of Jack and Rose - Fine performances by Daniel Day-Lewis and Camilla Belle as a father and daughter with unusually close feelings make writer-director Rebecca Miller's wayward fourth act tolerable.

4. Winter Solstice - Quietly effective suburban drama starring Anthony LaPaglia as a widower patching together his domestic affairs. Good supporting performance by Allison Janney (TV's The West Wing).

5. The Upside of Anger - Joan Allen and Kevin Costner are at the top of their game in a suburban comedy-drama echoing Terms of Endearment.
