Historic Hyde Park yard sale is Saturday

HISTORIC HYDE PARK - Historic Hyde Park is having a neighborhood yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The neighborhood is bound by Swann, Rome and Howard avenues and Bayshore Boulevard. Homes will have household items, toys, furniture and yard products.
Cinco de Mayo night benefits women's center
TAMPA HEIGHTS - Join Network of Tampa Bay for a night of community celebration and philanthropy at the fifth annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration to benefit the Centre for Women, which provides counseling, seminars, substance abuse treatment, educational opportunities and employment preparation to women.
The event will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday at the Renaissance Center for the Arts, 2201 N Florida Ave. Cost is $50. RSVP to 251-8437, ext. 225.
Take family fishing to bring home prizes
TAMPA - The city of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Wal-Mart host a day of fishing for kids and their families from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Bobby Hicks Park, 4120 Mango Ave.
The day features food, contests and prize drawings. All participants will receive a free goodie bag, including a waterproof tackle box guide, a fish ruler decal and a bobber.

Free MacDill picnic for kids seeking mentors
MACDILL - More than 100 volunteers from MacDill Air Force Base host 100 children today for the second annual "Big for a Day" picnic, a free event for kids on the waiting list for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay mentoring program.
The daylong event at the base features bowling, airplane tours, lunch, Humvee rides and military demonstrations.
More than 400 children are on the agency's waiting list, and volunteers are needed for the 2005-06 school year to spend time with a child reading, playing basketball or tutoring. For information, call 287-2210 or visit www.bbbsfl.org
Voice workshop open to all ages, skills
DOWNTOWN - Joseph and Violette Meyers will hold a Voice Master Class from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 7 at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center's Patel Conservatory.
The informal and interactive workshop is open to all ages and skill levels. The class features audience participation and one-on-one demonstrations. Singers 16 and older who wish to participate in the demonstrations may mail an audition tape or CD to 16517 Norwood Drive, Tampa, FL 33624.

Art center opens drawing competition
HISTORIC HYDE PARK - The Old Hyde Park Art Center, 705 W Swann Ave., holds an open competition for works in pencil, pen/ink, charcoal and pastel. The studio also seeks members' entries for the Annual Dorfmuller Memorial Award for Best Pastel.
Artists may submit a maximum of three pieces to the studio between noon and 3 p.m. Sunday. Entry fee is $5 for members, $10 for nonmembers. An awards reception and membership meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 12. Instructor Dee Lobo will create a portrait done in water-soluble oils. Light refreshments will be served. Reception to feature veteran actor/author
WESTSHORE - The Spring of Tampa Bay hosts a reception for Victor Rivas Rivers, author of A Private Family Matter, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Marriott Westshore, 1001 N West Shore Blvd. A veteran actor and a survivor of abuse, Rivers is the national spokesperson for the National Network to End Domestic Violence.

Get car seats checked at Great Moms Walk
PARKLAND ESTATES - Mothers of Preschoolers, a nonprofit organization for mothers with young children, is hosting the Great Moms Walk from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Bayshore Baptist Church, 3111 W Morrison Ave.
The event includes a 1/2-mile walk as well as car seat checks, vendors, a fire truck on display, a moonwalk and face painting.
