SANDWICH EATING CONTEST: How big is your appetite? Come down to Hogan's Great Sandwiches at 2 p.m. Saturday for its Great Sandwich Eating Contest. Eat the most for a trophy and for bragging rights. The entry fee is $15, benefiting Lily Lazar, a 4-year-old girl who was diagnosed with leukemia in January, as well as the Suncoast Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Come by the restaurant for a registration form, 14306 N Dale Mabry Highway, or call (813) 264-4797.

SKIPPER'S MUSIC: If your appetite leans more toward unusual music, try the self-proclaimed "psychedelic hickhop bluegrass" of Blueground Undergrass at Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road. Formed in 1998 by the Rev. Jeff Mosier, the band temporarily disbanded but has reunited with several of the original members. They try to create a "wall of twang" sound that combines roots music with rock. Mosier has performed with Widespread Panic, Phish and the Allman Brothers Band. Doors open at 8 p.m., and tickets are $10 in advance or $13 at the door. Call (813) 971-0666.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA ARTS: Or maybe you'd rather indulge your appetite for the visual arts? Check out the Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition in USF's William and Nancy Oliver Gallery, next to the Fine Arts Complex and the Contemporary Art Museum. This is the second week of the two-week exhibition, which will feature painting, drawing, collage, sculpture and printmaking. Featured work was done by students graduating from the fine arts program, who also set up the exhibition. The show will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and there will be a closing reception from 7 to 10 p.m. May 6. Call (813) 974-2360.

- Send information on upcoming events to Jeremy Hayes, at 813 269-5302, e-mail at jchayes@sptimes.com or fax to (813) 269-5310.
