Poised to win their second straight district title, the Hernando Christian Lions began to worry when Ocala St. John Lutheran scored three unanswered runs in five innings.
But in an explosive fifth inning, the Lions pumped life into their game by getting runners on base and scoring eight of them. It was enough to put the Saints away as the Lions collected their second district trophy with an 8-3 victory.
"The girls all wanted to be heroes (with their hitting)," Hernando Christian coach Susan Seidelmann said.
"They didn't realize that we had to get on base first."
Eighth-grade centerfielder Heidi Riley had a double and a triple and two RBIs for the Lions. Hernando Christian will host its first region quarterfinal next week at its new oncampus softball field.
