CLEARWATER - Palm Harbor University won its second consecutive district title, downing Countryside 1-0 at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex on Thursday.
Pinch-runner Amanda Roeding scored the winner in the second inning when Lauren Jurco laid down a perfect suicide squeeze.
Roeding was running for PHU ace Dani Hofer, who doubled during her second at-bat.
Hofer (18-0) allowed two hits, struck out 15 and was 1-for-3 at the plate.
"We knew win or lose we'd move on," PHU coach Chuck Poetter said. "We hit the ball well, but had a lot of base runners and couldn't execute the timely hit."
Sophomore shortstop Gionna DiSalvatore had both Countryside hits. She singled in the first and tripled in the fourth. But Hofer struck out the next three, ending the threat.
After pitching nine scoreless innings on Wednesday, freshman pitcher Desiree Baker (5-7) pitched three solid innings for Countryside.
The Hurricanes (26-0) host Seminole in a region quarterfinal Thursday at 4 p.m.
"We're ready," Poetter said. "I was a little surprised to see we are playing Seminole, but a lot of interesting things are going on right now."
